US casts big shadow over OPEC meeting

June 18, 2018 (9:14 mins)

Meghan Gordon and Brian Scheid

Ahead of this week's OPEC meeting, we talk to the last US official to attend an OPEC meeting. Kent Hance, a member of the Railroad Commission of Texas and a former US congressman, attended an OPEC meeting in Vienna 30 years ago. He thinks Trump administration officials should look to working with OPEC more as a way to work towards oil price stability, something congressional Democrats have been pushing the administration to do. The US is expected to cast a large shadow over this week's OPEC meeting as Iran and Venezuela push members countries for protection from US sanctions.

Amy Myers Jaffe, director of the Council on Foreign Relations' energy security and climate change program, discusses what role OPEC can have in propping up Venezuelan supply or protecting Iran from the impacts of the US exit from the nuclear deal.
